The Office of Government Relations seeks to build and maintain positive relationships with the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, and other surrounding county and municipal governments. By facilitating communication between Pitt administration, faculty, staff, and students with local municipal elected officials, department administrators, and their staff the University can provide its expertise on issues and help to address pressing challenges of our region. Whether through testimony before Pittsburgh City Council, as well as other commissions and authorities, or partnering to provide resources, the University seeks to be a strong partner across the Greater Pittsburgh region.
Parking Permits and Street Closures
Government Relations is the designated University administrative unit to process departmental requests for various city permits to the appropriate governmental entity. We have developed a standard procedure to be followed by all units seeking these permits. Please give careful consideration to the need for, and extent of, your request as requests are granted only for appropriate purposes. Local Government Resources
The City of Pittsburgh website provides information about local government, what department handles what, and how to access local resources. Pittsburgh City Council acts as the legislative body for the City and is primarily responsible for making laws which govern the City. This body also approves appointments as provided by the Charter, regulates revenues and expenditures, incurs debt, and approves the final operating and capital budgets for the city.
The Allegheny County website provides information about programs and services offered by Allegheny County. Allegheny County is governed by an elected county executive, 15-member county council, and appointed county manager.
